The Hair Habits That Actually Make a Difference Between Appointments

The short answer: Most of what separates clients who leave the salon looking great and stay looking great from the ones who lose it by day three comes down to a handful of small habits. How you're washing, whether your products match your hair type, how you're using your mask, and whether you're protecting your hair before heat. None of it is complicated. Most of it just takes knowing what to do.

We covered wash technique in detail in our long-lasting salon hair guide. The short version: the way you wash matters as much as what you wash with. Here's everything else.

Understanding Your Hair Type (Without Overcomplicating It)

Porosity is how well your hair absorbs and holds onto moisture. It explains why two people can use the same product and get completely different results.

Color-treated and chemically processed hair tends to have higher porosity, meaning it absorbs moisture quickly but loses it just as fast. It benefits from richer formulas and a sealing product applied after conditioning. Hair that feels heavy and resistant to moisture often has lower porosity and does better with lighter, water-based products.

If your products stopped working and you haven't changed anything, porosity mismatch is often why. It's something we assess at a consultation by actually looking at your hair. Bring it up at your next appointment and we'll figure it out together.

You're Probably Using Your Hair Mask Wrong

Hair masks are one of the most consistently misused products in a home routine. Two mistakes come up constantly.

Applying to soaking wet hair. A mask applied to soaking wet hair is really just sitting on the water film surrounding the strand rather than contacting the hair itself. Towel dry or squeeze out the excess water before applying. The mask needs to actually reach the hair to do anything.

Using it too often, especially protein masks. A weekly deep conditioning mask is appropriate for most hair types. Using a protein-heavy mask every wash day eventually creates protein overload, the hair accumulates more structural reinforcement than it can use and becomes progressively stiffer and more prone to breakage. More frequent is not more effective. Once a week is enough.

Two masks we carry that work well for different needs:

Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate 5-Minute Liquid Mask is our go-to for color-treated or chemically processed hair. Five minutes in the shower once or twice a week. It does structural bond repair rather than just coating the surface, which is why clients on it consistently notice a different feel over time rather than just temporarily softer hair after the wash.

Color Wow Money Masque is the one for clients whose primary concern is moisture and shine rather than bond repair. Intensely hydrating without the heaviness that weighs color-treated hair down. Great for clients who color regularly and want their hair to feel and look healthy between appointments without adding protein they don't need.

How to Make Your Blowout Last More Than One Day

This is the question we hear constantly on day two.

The single most effective thing you can do to extend a blowout is let each section cool completely in the brush before releasing it. Heat reshapes the hair. Cool air locks the shape in. If you release each section while it's still warm, the shape hasn't set yet and it relaxes out within hours. Wait for it to cool fully, release, and the style holds dramatically longer.

Apply a dry shampoo at the roots on the night of day one before any oil has developed. Most people reach for dry shampoo when their roots already feel oily on day two. Applying it the night before absorbs the oil before it builds and extends the volume and freshness through days two and three.

Heat Protection Is Not Optional

If you're using heat tools on your hair and skipping heat protectant, you're shortening the life of your color and accelerating structural damage with every use.

Color-treated hair is already more porous than unprocessed hair. Heat on top of that opens the cuticle further and lets color escape faster. It also degrades the bond structure that professional treatments and bond repair systems are working to rebuild. You can do everything right with your mask and your washing technique and undo it with unprotected heat styling.

Three options we carry depending on your routine:

Pureology Color Fanatic Spray is a 21-benefit leave-in that includes heat protection up to 450 degrees. Vegan, sulfate-free, and one of those products that does enough different things that it earns its place in the routine fast. Good for clients who want to minimize the number of products they're using.

Redken One United covers heat protection alongside moisture and frizz control in a single leave-in. Good for all hair types and especially useful through Bismarck winters.

Redken Hot Sets 22 Thermal Setting Mist is specifically for clients who want to lock in their style while protecting against heat. Applied before blow drying or heat styling, it helps the style hold longer while shielding the hair from damage. If your blowout isn't lasting as long as you'd like, this is worth adding to the routine.

The One Thing That Ties All of This Together

None of these habits work if they're inconsistent. A mask used once a week for two months produces a different result than one used whenever you remember. Keep the routine short enough that you'll actually do it every time. When something stops working, come in and we'll take a look.
